We’ve all heard of superfruits, and I’m sure you’ve seen the label applied to many prepared smoothies, breakfast bowls, and more.
But what DOES super fruit mean, and how is it beneficial to your health and well-being?
Superfruits are a nutritional KEY to healthy aging, lasting health, and your overall well-being. They are PACKED with:
Honestly, the list could go on and on. Superfruits are just little powerhouses that should be a part of your everyday diet if living an optimally healthy quality of life and longevity are your goals.
Many dieticians and holistic practitioners (myself included!) recommend adding a variety of colors to your diet due to the benefits of anthocyanins found in richly colored fruits, which, luckily, many superfruits are! Anthocyanins are the pigments that give purple, red, and blue fruits their color. They have anti-viral, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Anthocyanins have also been used to prevent and treat serious chronic health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer.
Just another reason why if you’re not incorporating super fruits into your diet, you need to be.
There are so many incredible fruits out there that fuel your body and have essential nutrients! I have so many favorites, but let me share just a few of them with you so you can feel empowered to start getting more intentional with your nutrition – especially if you desire vibrant, lasting health and well-being in the longterm.
When people think of superfruits, kiwi is not what immediately comes to mind, but it’s one of my favorites!
Kiwis are PACKED with essential nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. In fact, they have more vitamin C than an orange and more potassium than a banana!
These up-and-coming super fruit powerhouses have tons of iron and magnesium too, and the actinidin enzyme found in kiwis is not only rare but is FANTASTIC for digestion. Kiwis also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Another one of my favorites is strawberries!
These little red beauties are loaded with vitamin C (almost 160% of the daily recommended amount!), A, B-complex, and E and are packed with beneficial vitamins like zinc and iron.
They also have additional potential health benefits such as:
Strawberries also are a good source of fiber, flavonoids, antioxidants, phenolic acids, and anthocyanins. They are great for reducing inflammation too! So, as you can see, they’re amazing in every way, and they taste DELICIOUS (though all fruits do). They can be prepared in so many ways and are super convenient for when you’re on the go or just want a sweet, quick snack.
One of the most highly tested superfruits is the blueberry. Extensive studies have been done on blueberries to verify just how many benefits it contains— and it’s a lot.
Here’s just a taste of what blueberries can potentially do for you when they’re a regular part of a balanced, healthy diet:
Need I say more? There actually IS more. They’re incredibly high in anthocyanin and have the highest levels of antioxidants compared with almost any other fruit. Antioxidants help fight free radicals, which can damage your cells and lead to further destruction like chronic health problems. They are low in carbs, so they are essentially the perfect snack.
This super fruit is native to Asia and has been used in herbal remedies for around 2000 years thanks to its high levels of antioxidants. Gogi berries have so many benefits that are currently being studies:
These brightly-colored tiny fruits are high in fiber, have anti-aging properties, and are just an overall great fruit to add to your diet. They’re awesome as a smoothie bowl topping!
Acai berries are pretty trendy right now and have been steadily increasing in popularity over the last few years. They have pits like apricots so they’re technically not a berry, even though they’re called berries.
They’re a dark purple fruit that’s native to South and Central America. Like all fruits on this list, Acai berries have high antioxidant levels that help neutralize free radicals that can damage your cells and lead to cancer, diabetes, and other serious chronic health issues.
These high fat, low sugar fruits are nutrient-dense and have many potential benefits, such as:
Acai berries are a great way to incorporate a new super fruit into your everyday life, they have so many amazing benefits!
Not sure how to add them to your current diet? There are ENDLESS ways to incorporate them into a healthy lifestyle, including just popping them right in your mouth for a fast snack. You can get frozen açaí at the grocery store and add it to the blender for a healing smoothie or smoothie bowl.
You can try a personal favorite of mine— adding one of your favorite superfruits to a small bowl with mulberries and drizzle with raw honey for a healing snack!
If you’re looking for the perfect healthy treat to add to your grocery list, this entire blog post is the ideal place to start. Remember, these are just a few of the INCREDIBLE superfruits available. So explore and experiment with them. See which are your favorite— Comment below and share the ones that you absolutely love!
